2009 Winter Newsletter
Autumn 2009 saw our rally at Pixley End CS near Ledbury where we enjoyed probably the nicest caravanning weather of the year. There was also a good representative turnout of caravans; including examples of early & late Casettas, Caribbean, Cosmopolitan, Continental,13/2, 15/2 & 16/2 Commanders — but no Casalettes!
Rob & Sheila Magson’s arrangements worked perfectly as did the logistical exercise of butting up the Club Pavilion (normally two 15 ft. awnings) to the Magson’s Continental awning, giving plenty of room for the social activities and conviviality, whilst the Trumpet Inn was within walking distance across the fields for the Saturday evening meal. We were pleased to welcome several new members to their first COC Rally. 6 vans stayed until the Tuesday morning, the last to leave being the Hon Sec & wife who were going on to the CC site at Moorhampton for another 5 days of glorious West Country weather.
Committee Meeting. At their Pixley End meeting the committee decided, amongst other things, that in view of increasing costs the Club would no longer provide wine for the Thursday evening fish & chip supper, and members will be asked to bring along their own drinks. A new auditor was appointed
Carlight trading developments. Sleaford Caravans Ltd of North Rauceby was reborn as Classic Caravans Ltd about a year ago with new investors and directors, but the new company has so far been unable to negotiate a license to manufacture Carlights from J. Hodgson & Sons Ltd, owners of the Carlight trademark. The Hodgson brothers have recently appointed Vantage Caravans Ltd of Tattershall as ‘Carlight agents for the sale of pre-used and Classic Carlight Caravans’. The Hodgsons are giving their Carlight Collection an airing next May at Tattershall, and the week-end will coincide with our Club’s rally about 45 miles away at North Runcton. This will be a rare occasion to view some equally rare vans. Then in July Classic Caravans will be having their usual Factory Open Day and the Owners’ Club and the Enthusiasts Club will be running a linked rally at nearby Metheringham, details later. Members remain free of course to choose for themselves where to have their vans serviced.
Carlight Register - Chairman Robert Magson is keen to create a Register of all Carlights. He wishes to stress the name & address of owners will not be divulged—only the county/city location of the van. What he would like is a good photo, chassis/serial number and date of manufacture plus any interesting Carlight mods. Contact him at firstname.lastname@example.org
Guiness Book of Records. If your Carlight was built before 1980 you might be interested in a Charity fund raising event August B H 2010 at Stapleford Miniature Railway open weekend at Melton Mowbray. An attempt will be made to set a new official world record for the number of classic caravans displayed at a rally and hopefully raise some money for the charity ‘LOROS’. Guiness Record officials will be present. Caravans built before August 1980 only. Contact Nich Stanyard 07803 250008 (6-9pm.
